How did you learn how to code?

Asked by Anonymous

I can’t actually remember how I originally started to learn but I think I first started looking in to how to write code when I was about 11. Back then I used to just build sites in the most crazy ways like using Microsoft Office and Publisher. After just playing with HTML for a couple of years I started wondering how some sites had member logins, chat rooms, etc and so I started looking in to how those types of things worked. I found out most of them were made using PHP and so I downloaded an open-source member system and started looking in to how all the different parts of the code worked (using documentation from sites like php.net). I continued doing this (studying code) for several years until I knew the main concepts of computer science and from then on I’ve just kept trying to teach myself new things through research.

I think I may have also followed one or two tutorials when I was first learning so that I understood the fundamental aspects of programming but as I’m not that big a fan of them (tutorials) I mostly just used online documentation to learn how different languages worked.
